The Shipley Family
Ethel Loumetta Shipley (1878-1912)
(Wife to Chauncey Pond, Mother to Arthur Elmer Pond)
Ethel Loumetta Shipley was born July 15, 1878 in Faribault, Minnesota to Elmer Parvin Shipley and Sarah Snedeker, both originally from Ohio.
The 1880 Census shows the family living in Orange Township, Ashland County, Ohio. The household consisted of Elmer Parvin, Sarah Snedeker, and their children Elmore (age 8), Manning R. (age 6), and Ethel L., (age 2). Elmer's profession is listed as "Wood carpenter".
20 years later, the 1900 Census shows the family living in Minneapolis. Ethel, having married Chauncey Case Pond in 1897, was not listed along with the family. Her older brother, Elmore was still living with his parents. Elmer's profession now is listed as "Contractor". Elmore's profession is listed as "Barber". Elmore lists his father as having been born in Pennsylvania, but Sarah list her father as having been born in Ohio.
Elmer Parvin Shipley and Sarah O. Snediker
September 21, 1870, Elmer Parvin Shipley married Sarah O. Snediker in Richland Ohio. In the Richland County Marriage Register, it appears Edwin L. Snediker is the person attesting to the age of Sarah, which is between the ages of 16 and 18. The groom's names appears to be "P.L. Shipley." Though the name of the groom differs slightly, this date and place match exactly every other records relating to this marriage.
Mr. Shipley's name seems to switch from Parvin Elmer, to Elmer P., to P.L...... so it's confusing. Mr. Shipley lives until 1913 and dies in Minneapolis. He is buried at Lakewood Cemetery.
Sarah Snediker lives on until 1924, when she dies from diabetes. Her Grandson, Arthur Elmer Pond, stopped off in Detroit to visit her where she was living with her sons. Here, the records starts to get fuzzy. Her 1924 death certificate contradicts much of the genealogical work commissioned by Arthur Elmo Pond.
Sarah O. Snediker's Family
On the 1924 death certificate Sarah's middle name is "Arleta." Her father is Edwin Snediker or Snedeker of New York, rather than Garret. Her mother is "Mary Ann Banks" of Jackson County Virginia. Sarah's death certificate indicates that the information is provided by Manning R. Shipley, Mary Ann Banks' son and presumably her brother. Sarah's address at the time of her death was 50 Pleasant Drive.
Sarah Arleta Snedeker had several siblings. One of them was Luella S. Snedeker born January, 18, 1857. Lullea married a fella named Corwin Hedrick, a railroad clerk, and lived until June 29, 1937 (6-29-1937) when she died from a cerebral hemorrhage in Richland, Ohio. Her death certificate indicates that her father was Edwin Snedeker and her mother was Mary Ann Banks. The reason that we can be sure that Sarah Arleta Snedeker and Luella S. Snedeker are related is that the address listed for Luella is 50 Pleasant Avenue, same as Sarah's at the time of her death. The 1920 City Directory for Mansfield, Ohio lists 50 Pleasant Avenue as the home of Corwin and Luella Hedrick.
This proves that Sarah Snedeker was not the child of Garret Snedeker and Margaret DeVeaux, as thought by the genealogical study commision by Arthur Elmer, but the the child of Edwin L. Snedeker and Mary Ann Banks. The same Edwin L. Snedeker that attested to her age on her marriage registry in 1870.
